It's been a little over a year since I written here in my blog and I've definitely been busy drumming. I want to let you know that most of my content has been on Facebook and Instagram since August 2014. Until I get back to this blog I urge you to follow me on those. There are some cool drumming things coming up that I will share on those platforms very soon and here to. Until then add me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/charliewoodburn and follow me on Instagram @cwoodburnz . Also, another goal is to do updates and drumming videos on YouTube. You can check out videos now in the My Drumming Videos section at www.YouTube.com/chardrum
Hope to get back to blogging soon. Keep music alive! Here's the drum happenings since the beginning of Summer and a couple of week's back to the beginning of June. I did a lot of recording and one off shows in June which was fun. July brought several new artists to work with which was very challenging and satisfying.
One of the highlights was playing The Levitt Pavilion free concert series with my band Bell Gardens. Here are some photos taken by Melissa Wilson and Shon Sullivan
I'm writing today to get you caught up in my drumming world. I've become off by half a month in writing so now I'm getting back on!
There were a lot of schedule conflicts the last 2 months where I was not able to play with some artists but I'm sure I will play with them in the future. Specifically, John Wolf's Math and Science's band, Charlie Clark and Miranda Lee Richards. Also, it didn't work out but I almost toured with The Telescopes and played a show with LSD and The Search For God. Come to think of it, I was up to tour with Dean Wareham and play with Tom Jones too! Just goes to show how my little world goes sometimes. But no worries, there are plenty of great shows and gigs coming up this Summer and Fall. And I bet I will record or tour with some of these artists just mentioned in the future and/or other amazing opportunities! OK here is what I have been up to:
So getting right to it I stopped writing in this drumming blog last fall (September 2012 to be exact) because I became so busy. I would recap the second part of 2012 but that journal/calendar is in storage and today is the only day I have to write this. Today, I am going to run down 2013. If you are reading this and you helped me out this year by letting me sleep on your floor, feeding me, giving me a ride some place or calling me for a drumming job, THANK YOU! You are helping me make my dreams come alive. This year has been a wild ride jumping out of one van into another but I wouldn't change it for anything.

A very cool thing that happened recently is that at a music swap meet at BedrockLA (massive rehearsal/recording studio in Echo Park) I won some rehearsal time in a raffle and then met the Mapex drum reps. I am now talking to them about an endorsement. They let me borrow a kit the next weekend to do some gigs with, and I loved it. Also, I was hired as a drum tech for Bedrock the following week, which has all new Mapex kits. After doing that, I know all about the company!

Something I want to address is since the beginning of June I've been contacted by so many artists but didnt get the chance to work with them. I usually do a shout out to them every couple of blog posts or so. Some of these go back to January. Thank you to IAMEVE (Tiff Randol), Dylan Dray, Pony Boy (Marchelle Bradanini), Raven Hughes, Max Tepper, Soul Rillah, Light FM and The Electra (Shelina Louise). All great artists!

Also, the first EP "Hangups Need Company" with be released on cassette (yes, a tape) through Burger Records. No official dates yet.

Also, I have been rehearsing with The Abe Lincoln Story In April we played our first Taix residency show (every first Friday of the month til July). Tonight we are playing with Josh Haden's band Spain. They are going to play there 1995 album "Blue Moods of Spain" in it's entirety. ALSs' record is also coming out this summer with a projected June release.
Charlie Woodburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06694465792539814838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2639594600692353432.post-63282034106915245142012-03-10T16:00:00.001-08:002012-04-09T15:04:41.895-07:00February Drumming and Drum LessonsOn February 18th and 19th I did a studio recording with The Richtie West Band at Company studios in Burbank. The session was great because it was recorded to 2" analog tape live. It's been a while since I've recorded with everyone in the same room. Plus, recording to tape gives that warm, rich sound that I love. I played brushes and Hot Rods to 9 songs and got to work with an amazing cast of players. Be Hussey was the engineer and was very easy to work with. He had a vintage set of Ludwig drums that sounded great under mics. I used a Ludwig Black Beauty snare drum and a Pearl Free Floating Maple Snare that sounded amazing with brushes (note to self!)

I am still giving drum lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My students are currently Max Berolzheimer and Jesse Phelps. Both students are coming along fine. I teach Max at his father's studio and Jesse at his house. The fact that they are both sight reading drum charts is pretty amazing. I forget that they are both 16!

Tomorrow night Sunday March 11th I am playing with Bell Gardens at The Echoplex. I played there once before with The Digs. I am looking forward to the show. If you are reading this we play at 9pm.
Charlie Woodburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06694465792539814838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2639594600692353432.post-9009212847784513402012-01-13T01:03:00.000-08:002012-01-31T01:34:15.460-08:00DECEMBER DRUMMING AND THE NEW YEAR 2012Here are the gigs and recordings I did in December and the beginning of January.
Cool fact from my tour: When I was on tour with D.O.C I was walking around Dallas, TX in the Deep Ellum area of town and randomly ran into Mark Burgess of The Chameleons Vox, who I have worked with before. They where playing that night at Trees and he gave me a pass to see them perform. I was surprised because I had no idea they were playing. Also, I got to hang out with my friend Wanz Dover.Charlie Woodburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06694465792539814838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2639594600692353432.post-27928835616701842532011-10-21T13:43:00.000-07:002011-10-27T12:19:53.042-07:00DOC October / November Tour datesHello from Cleveland! Some cool things are brewing. I'm ready to get to work! So here is what happened in January:

My drum tech prayers where answered from none other than the awesome drummer Daniel Goldblatt! This guy knows his gear and is a great drummer. Having a drum tech in the studio will help out immensely!

Drum lessons are shaping up. I am now doing them at Bedrock Rehearsals in Echo Park. Contact me for rates and times. charliewoodburn@gmail.com

Bell Gardens has been accepted to SXSW this year. We will be playing our showcase in addition to several other shows and parties. I will post as the dates become available. Until then we are rehearsing and recording. Man, it will be good to go back for a visit. I miss Austin.

Bell Gardens "Through The Rain" Video:

Bell Gardens - THROUGH THE RAIN from ZF FILMS on Vimeo.
Charlie Woodburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06694465792539814838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2639594600692353432.post-2223010218535470022011-01-05T19:45:00.000-08:002011-01-05T20:12:15.565-08:00November AND December to 2011Happy New Year to all! So I am going to go back and recap Nov. and Dec. then talk about the future.

In November I started giving drum lessons again. Only one student right now but I want pick up more in the new year on the same day, Thursday. So if you are looking for lessons contact me at charliewoodburn@gmail.com and Thursday is lesson day.

Did a lot of rehearsals with Bell Gardens.

Went into Glenwood Studio's in Burbank with Sunburst's to record one song. We also played a show at La Cita in Downtown L.A.

Also, I was honored to be asked to fill in on drums by the band Wait.Think.Fast. but there drummer was able to do the gig after all.

In December, as you may or may not know in LA the music biz slows down. But I did get to do one thing that was pretty cool. A producer friend of mine asked me to do a drum tech gig. I got to drum tech for Dennis Chambers while he was playing with Mike Stern at Catalina Jazz club on Sunset. That was alot of fun and I learned alot too.

So....The New Year! 2011! Well my resolution is to get my own drum tech! I've been hauling around my own drums for 13 years in L.A. If there are any tech's that are interested let me know!

Oh yeah, and to get charliewoodburn.com off the ground. Come on 2011!Charlie Woodburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06694465792539814838noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2639594600692353432.post-31268893534712294392010-11-06T10:09:00.000-07:002010-11-06T10:34:27.872-07:00Rocktober in NovemberI seem to be doing my blog posts a month late! I post within the first or second week of the month after what I am talking about. ANYWHO! October was a month of recording and working on web stuff. I am still working on getting c w .com going. So here is what I did in Oct. 2010.

Played a Halloween themed show with Hexham Heads at Spaceland on Oct. 5th

Sunbursts-played our first 3 shows ( Venice Bistro, Liquid Zoo and Echopulco-Halloween themed also!), have been recording demo's like mad, uping our web presence with facebook and website http://sunbursts.net

I recorded two songs with Tristan Nortan.

I also recorded two songs with Bell Gardens.Charlie Woodburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06694465792539814838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2639594600692353432.post-76957878364719412882010-10-02T17:59:00.000-07:002010-10-02T19:41:51.190-07:00September 2010 was a busy month! So it's been a while since I posted a blog entry. I was pretty busy in September. Like I said before on Facebook, soon I am going to give the blog a make over but haven't had the time. Also, it might be time to launch a website with the help of a friend or 2. I played a lot of shows, recorded some songs, went on 2 very strange auditions, talked to 3 different people/projects about recording in the future, played guitar on a song live (a first) and am practicing doing back-up vocals on 2 songs live (another first and yes playing the drums at the same time) So here are some links to check out the stuff that I was doing this last month:

Hexham Heads new single "You Make Me Feel Like A Ghost" and live video "Human Voices"

Sunbursts new website www.sunbursts.net with upcoming show dates!

Bell Gardens video "Though The Rain"

Sara Radle's record 'Four' was released and we played a weekly Saturday night residency at Casey's Irish Pub in Downtown L.A.

I did some rehearsals with the hardcore punk band GreedCharlie Woodburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06694465792539814838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2639594600692353432.post-17088311773768312252010-08-19T00:12:00.000-07:002010-10-14T15:34:03.239-07:00Microphone test @ Seedy Underbelly studiosMicrophone test @ Seedy Underbelly studios.
