2013 Drumming year in review

Hello again folks, it's been a while! So getting right to it I stopped writing in this drumming blog last fall (September 2012 to be exact) because I became so busy. I would recap the second part of 2012 but that journal/calendar is in storage and today is the only day I have to write this. Today, I am going to run down 2013. If you are reading this and you helped me out this year by letting me sleep on your floor, feeding me, giving me a ride some place or calling me for a drumming job, THANK YOU! You are helping me make my dreams come alive. This year has been a wild ride jumping out of one van into another but I wouldn't change it for anything.

It's been a while since I posted here, but I'm back! I will start with my activity/gigs since mid-May, then talk about what's been going on with me currently on drums.

May 4th The Abe Lincon Story at Taix
May 15th Drunk On Crutches at Los Globos
June 1st The Abe Lincoln Story at Taix
June 2nd Recorded new material with Bell Gardens
June 15th Bell Gardens in Caramel, CA

And here are some new releases I'm on:

The Abe Lincoln Story "What Time Is It?! It's Story Time!" record is available Itunes and on CD at  http://abelincolnstory.bandcamp.com

The new Bell Gardens single 'Through the Rain' is available for pre-order at http://shop.southern.com/bell-gardens/ with the album "Full Sundown Assembly" to be released in September on Southern Records. Check out Bell Gardens at www.bellgardensmusic.com

Burger Records just re-released the Bell Gardens "Hangup's Need Company" debut EP on hand numbered, limited edition cassette. You can get it at: http://www.burgerrecords.org/apps/webstore/products/show/3154919

A very cool thing that happened recently is that at a music swap meet at BedrockLA (massive rehearsal/recording studio in Echo Park) I won some rehearsal time in a raffle and then met the Mapex drum reps. I am now talking to them about an endorsement. They let me borrow a kit the next weekend to do some gigs with, and I loved it. Also, I was hired as a drum tech for Bedrock the following week, which has all new Mapex kits. After doing that, I know all about the company!

Something I want to address is since the beginning of June I've been contacted by so many artists but didnt get the chance to work with them. I usually do a shout out to them every couple of blog posts or so. Some of these go back to January. Thank you to IAMEVE (Tiff Randol), Dylan Dray, Pony Boy (Marchelle Bradanini), Raven Hughes, Max Tepper, Soul Rillah, Light FM and The Electra (Shelina Louise). All great artists!

February Drumming and Drum Lessons

On February 18th and 19th I did a studio recording with The Richtie West Band at Company studios in Burbank. The session was great because it was recorded to 2" analog tape live. It's been a while since I've recorded with everyone in the same room. Plus, recording to tape gives that warm, rich sound that I love. I played brushes and Hot Rods to 9 songs and got to work with an amazing cast of players. Be Hussey was the engineer and was very easy to work with. He had a vintage set of Ludwig drums that sounded great under mics. I used a Ludwig Black Beauty snare drum and a Pearl Free Floating Maple Snare that sounded amazing with brushes (note to self!)

I am still giving drum lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My students are currently Max Berolzheimer and Jesse Phelps. Both students are coming along fine. I teach Max at his father's studio and Jesse at his house. The fact that they are both sight reading drum charts is pretty amazing. I forget that they are both 16!

Tomorrow night Sunday March 11th I am playing with Bell Gardens at The Echoplex. I played there once before with The Digs. I am looking forward to the show. If you are reading this we play at 9pm.

Drum happenings in November and a little bit of December

Hello all, here is a run down of what I did in November and some of December on drums.

Nov. 15 Returned from tour with Drunk on Crutches
Nov. 19 More recording with The Abe Lincoln Story
Nov. 28 Started rehearsals with Bell Gardens
Nov. 29 Played a show with Y at 3 (of) Clubs in Hollywood
Nov. 30 Played at The Old Town Pub in Pasadena with Drunk on Crutches
Dec. 1 Started Rehearsals with Laura Meyer

Tonight Dec. 6th I am playing with Laura Meyer and Eric Golding at The Silverlake Lounge at 9pm. It's Laura's first show in LA with full band and it's a show you don't want to miss.

Cool fact from my tour: When I was on tour with D.O.C I was walking around Dallas, TX in the Deep Ellum area of town and randomly ran into Mark Burgess of The Chameleons Vox, who I have worked with before. They where playing that night at Trees and he gave me a pass to see them perform. I was surprised because I had no idea they were playing. Also, I got to hang out with my friend Wanz Dover.
